Commagene's road, still rebuilding
Adıyaman's city centre took catastrophic damage in the February 2023 earthquake and is still under active reconstruction - this is not a normal aspirational stop. But the Commagene sites around it (Cendere Bridge, Karakuş Tumulus, Perre) largely survived intact or have since been restored, and remain genuinely worth a detour if you're already heading to Nemrut.

Make the route work
Adıyaman Airport (ADF) has domestic flights from Istanbul and Ankara. Kahta, roughly 40 minutes from the airport, is the more established base for the Nemrut/Cendere/Karakuş circuit; Adıyaman city itself is more relevant for Perre and the museum.
Cendere Bridge and Karakuş Tumulus sit on the Kahta road and are usually visited together, by car or organised tour, on the way to or from Nemrut. Perre and the Archaeology Museum are both close to Adıyaman city itself.
Turkish lira is standard. Card acceptance in Adıyaman city is inconsistent while much of the local business district is still rebuilding — carry more cash than you would elsewhere.
Mobile coverage is generally available in both Adıyaman city and Kahta. It can weaken on the rural roads out toward Cendere and Karakuş.
Approach the city centres visible earthquake damage and reconstruction with the same restraint you would show at any disaster-recovery site — this is not a backdrop for casual photography.

A royal Commagene burial mound whose famous handshake relief collapsed in the 2023 earthquake and was rebuilt within months.
Built 30-20 BCE by Mithridates II of Commagene as a hierothesion (royal mausoleum) for Queen Isias and princesses Antiochis and Aka I - one of only three sanctioned Commagene royal tombs, alongside Nemrut and Arsameia. The column bearing its famous dexiosis (handshake) relief collapsed in the February 2023 earthquake and was restored by May 2023.

A Roman arch bridge from 203 CE that survived the 2023 earthquake untouched, still carrying traffic 1,800 years later.
Built 203-204 CE by soldiers of the Roman Sixteenth Legion after Septimius Severus's Parthian campaign, funded by 'the four towns of Commagene.' Four dedicatory pillars originally carried statues of Severus, his wife Julia Domna, and sons Caracalla and Geta - only the Geta pillar's statue is missing, likely removed after his damnatio memoriae.
