Why it matters
Commercial ballooning here grew into the busiest operation of its kind anywhere. The civil aviation authority runs a slot system over the Nevşehir flight zone, dividing it into weather sectors and issuing a colour-coded ruling for each before dawn. Passenger numbers rose from 585,582 in 2019 to 754,098 in 2025. A separate, smaller flight zone operates over Ihlara in Aksaray province.
What to know before you go
This is the reason most people come, and the item most likely to go wrong, so here is how it actually works. Flights are not scheduled like aircraft. A slot centre releases a limited number of launch permissions per window; the authority sets that cap annually and does not publish it in the current directive, though press reporting in 2025 described up to 156 balloons airborne at once. Operators buy into slots and sell seats against them. Around 30 licensed companies fly here, with reported fleets of 354–367 balloons and 514–585 licensed pilots. In peak season the seats sell out before the slots do, which is the real reason you cannot turn up and buy one. Then there is weather. Flights took place on 237 days in 2022, 216 in 2023, 236 in 2024 and 223 in 2025 — a consistent 216–237, well short of the 250–300 operators advertise. Across one measured year, 12.6% of planned commercial flights did not fly at all. The decision is not your operator's alone: the authority flags each weather sector before dawn, and a red flag closes that sector outright. If your flight is cancelled and you can see balloons up, they may be in a different sector, or launched from the separate Ihlara zone in Aksaray. Weather cancellation by the operator means a full refund; that is the licensing requirement, and reputable operators also offer priority rebooking. That priority is exactly why a single-night stay is a bad bet — after a grounded morning, the next flyable one is already oversubscribed. On safety, be plain: a peer-reviewed review found twelve accidents across 81,112 flight hours between August 2013 and July 2017, with three deaths and 33 serious injuries, and every single one happened during landing. Later fatal accidents include two Spanish passengers in a hard landing near Avanos in October 2022, and a pilot killed near Güzelyurt on 15 June 2025 after a sudden wind shift. Against 750,000-plus passengers a year the rate is low, but it is not zero and it clusters in the last two minutes. Choosing an operator: look for an air operator certificate, licensed commercial pilots, and a stated basket size. Baskets run from about 8 to 28 passengers, and the cheapest tickets are the biggest baskets, where you may be standing four deep from the edge. Ask which flight zone you launch from and get it in writing — flights sold generically as "Cappadocia" sometimes launch over Ihlara's river gorge, which is beautiful and has no fairy chimneys in it at all.
