Why it matters
Attaleia was founded under Pergamon and later became a Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman port. Hadrian's Gate commemorates the emperor's visit in 130 CE; the lanes inside preserve fragments from many later lives of the city.
What to know before you go
Begin at Hadrian's Gate before the streets become busy. The point is not to collect every monument: move downhill through Kaleiçi, pause where the walls reappear, and let the old harbour reveal why this position mattered.
Return by a different lane so the district feels like a lived neighbourhood rather than a single photo stop. Early morning gives the gate space; evening gives the harbour atmosphere.
Look for: Notice the worn passage beneath the three arches, then trace how walls, Ottoman houses, religious buildings, and the harbour fit the same slope.
